The dealer distributes two cards to each player and two to themselves — one card is face-up, and the other is face-down (the hole card).
Hit – request an additional card. Stand – keep your current hand. Double Down – double your bet and receive exactly one more card. Split – split a pair into two separate hands. Surrender – surrender and recover half your bet (where available).
Once all players have acted, the dealer reveals the hole card and follows fixed rules: the dealer must hit on 16 or below and stand on 17 or above.

Doubling down lets you double your original bet in exchange for receiving exactly one more card. When used at the right moment, it's the most powerful weapon in your blackjack arsenal.
Best Situations to Double Down:
- Your hand totals 11 – almost always double down
- Your hand totals 10 — double down unless the dealer shows a 10 or Ace
- Your hand totals 9 – double down only when the dealer shows a weak card (3–6)
- Soft 16 to 18 (Ace + 5/6/7) – when the dealer shows a weak card (4–6)
Do not double down when the dealer looks strong (7–Ace) unless the basic strategy chart specifically calls for it.
Always split (regardless of the dealer's card):
- Ace-Ace – always split. Two hands starting with an Ace are an extremely strong position
- 8-8 – always split. A hard 16 is the worst hand you can hold; starting fresh from 8 puts you in a far stronger position.
Never split:
- 10-10 — a hand of 20 is extremely strong; never split it
- 5-5 – you're better off doubling down on a total of 10 than splitting into two weak hands of 5.
Split based on the dealer's card: 2-2, 3-3, 6-6, 7-7, 9-9 follow rules that depend on whether the dealer appears weak or strong.
When the dealer's face-up card is an Ace, you are offered "Insurance" – a side bet worth half your original wager that pays 2:1 if the dealer has Blackjack.
Short answer: Don't take Insurance. Mathematically, the Insurance bet carries a house edge of around 7.7% — far higher than a standard blackjack bet. The only exception is if you're already proficient at card counting, which is not practical in online blackjack.
For a solid blackjack session, you should have at least 50 minimum betting units as your bankroll. For example, if the table minimum is RM10, set aside RM500 for a single session. This gives you enough breathing room to ride out variance without burning through your bankroll too quickly.
Avoid drastically increasing your bets after a losing streak. Flat betting — wagering the same amount every round — is the safest approach for blackjack over the long run.
